Dish, Google in Talks Over LTE Network Collaboration - Though Source Warns Talks Are Preliminary

Dish has stated repeatedly that they need a partner for a planned LTE network, and at least one partner under consideration is Google. According to a new report in the Wall Street Journal, Dish and Google have been talking about the possibility of a joint wireless effort over the last several weeks, though an anonymous source also insists the talks are very preliminary, are part of larger discussions with numerous companies, and may ultimately lead to nothing:

The talks between Dish and Google aren't advanced and could amount to nothing, one of the people said. Google is just one of several companies that Dish has held talks with recently, and the discussions with other potential partners are also at an exploratory stage, said the people familiar with the discussions. It is unclear which other companies are discussing a potential partnership with Dish.

While Google likes playing niche roles in spurring the industry (Google Fiber, Google Wi-Fi), they've steered clear of national broadband ambitions so far. Any network built by Dish likely won't see deployment until 2015 -- since Dish still needs FCC spectrum waivers, and the LTE Advanced equipment for its S-band spectrum they plan to use likely won't even be available by then.
