Robots of the future may be draped in skin more sensitive than human?s thanks to some high-tech engineering inspired by interlocking hairs on beetle wings.

As it is today, the sensor can be wrapped around a person?s wrist and serve as a heart rate monitor.

The sensor is made from sheets of metal-coated, hair-like polymer nano-fibers that are sandwiched together so that the hairs interlock. That?s similar to the wing-locking mechanism of beetles, Kahp-Yang Suh, an engineer at Seoul National University, told Chemistry World.?

For beetles, the mechanism allows the bugs to rather easily lift their wings up, but it creates a shear force that prevents the wings from moving around too much.?

The researchers mimicked the interlocking fiber?arrangement to create their sensor and then wired it up so that an electrical current can be applied.

?When the sensor is pressed, twisted or brushed, the squishy metal-coated hairs change position, generating changes in the sensor?s electrical resistance,? Nature News explains.?

The researchers can distinguish between three types of mechanical strain: pressure, shear and torsion, a twisting motion.

Human skin can distinguish between these types of strain as well, but researchers have struggled to replicate it in an artificial design.

In the video below, Suh?s team demonstrates how the sensor is used to measure a human?s heartbeat, an application the team is already considering bringing to market.?

Future uses of the skin could include use as a robotic skin, for example giving a robotic glove a better sense of touch. It could also be used to coat a prosthetic limb.

The sensor is described in the July 30 issue of Nature Materials.

As a mother of four children, I really thought I'd been through it all with my three older kids (3, 4.5 and 7). But this little one has really thrown a fast ball on me. What has worked with my other kids has not worked with him. He thinks it is funny to hit, pull hair, and even bite. An example: I was working in the basement for a few hours last night (I work part-time from home) while my husband watched the kids. When I came upstairs, my son ran up to me with his little chubby arms reached out. Of course I picked him up. Then he promptly hit me in the face and tried to pull my hair while laughing. I do not tolerate this behavior. I promptly firmly grasped his little hand, said "no" and put him in his room. Of course he screamed and pounded on the door. After a few minutes, I went and picked him up again. He tried to hit me again and we repeated the process. I go through this with him all the time. He hits the other kids, pulls their hair, etc... I have tried to avoid spanking my kids throughout my parenting years. There have been a few instances where we've spanked our kids, but we've never used a belt (I will never do that), and it has always been with our hand. I have tried firmly "bopping" my little one's diapered bottom, but he just thinks that's funny. Should I resort to a stinging swat? I'm trying to teach him to be gentle, so I'm not sure if that is the best approach either. At any rate, I am exhausted. He is everywhere. He learned to climb out of his crib, he climbs on the table (I of course don't tolerate this) and if someone forgets to close the bathroom door it's a disaster. It's not like he has no attention span. He will sit on my lap and listen to a story. But what I'm doing does not seem to be getting through to him. Does anyone have advice/ideas?

She broke skin on me TWICE (ages 1-2 years), bit a kid at school (almost got kicked out of her daycare!), bit my mom...we tried time outs, etc, but she wasn't getting it...until I bit her back one day (she bit my shoulder and drew blood). Not my proudest moment, but it worked. I didn't bite hard, but enough to where she was shocked and said, "OUCH!" and after that, she didn't bite another person. I don't know about the other stuff...other than he's just a rough little guy. Maybe some other posters have suggestions.

You've already established that spanking is a non-starter, and that sending him to his room is effective, so continue to explore that. Take away (for a week or so, not forever) a toy that he values. No treats, maybe. In other words, determine what pushes his buttons. But seriously, biting back (not too hard) may do the trick. It apparently did for me.

SEBASTIAN HARDIE Blueprint music review by KeepItDark

From memory, I first heard Sebastian Hardie at Melbourne University in the mid or late 70's with a cover of Tubular Bells. A very impressive four piece perhaps on the softer side of Yes and Genesis.

Their first two releases "Four Moments" and "Windchase" we were received by local prog fans. It has been a 35 year wait for the third release "Blueprint" although guitarist Mario Millo has released several albums (and soundtracks) in the intervening years.

Blueprint follows very much in the same vein as "Four Moments" and "Windchase" and I am certain some of the earlier themes have been revisited.

Toivo Plit's keyboards are close to Tony Banks' style with some nice restrained keyboard solos, Mario Millo's guitar is reminiscent of the softer side of Steve Howe but neither dominants.

Overall, this is a very good collection of tracks. Maybe the lyrics are a bit puerile but this is mainly an instrumental album with very limited singing.

It does leaving the listener wondering what may have been had these guys continued through the 80s and 90s. They certainly had the strength in musical ability with Plit and Millo and songwriting to deliver some classics?but now are most likely to become a footnote in prog history

Recommended for 70's prog fans. 3.5 stars.

The Fair Debt Collection Protections Act (FDCPA) was enacted to regulate the ways in which debt collectors may interact with the borrowers. The regulations provide for penalties to the debt collectors who break rules and harass those in debt.

Senator Al Franken (D-Minn.) proposed the bill S. 3350, End Debt Collector Abuse Act of 2012 in late June according to Inside Patient Finance on July 11, 2012. This bill is similar to a bill that was never voted on in 2010 regarding the FDCPA but strengthens protections regarding medical debt collection.

The bill recognizes medical debt as ?unique.? Patients do not always know what their bill will be in advance. Also, the bill says that, ?consumers seek out health care services out of medical need, not choice? Overly aggressive medical debt collection can discourage consumers from seeing needed healthcare services, with dire financial, physical and public health consequences for themselves and their communities.?

The bill says that emergency medical services cannot be withheld, even if there is an unpaid debt. Also, debts cannot be collected using protected patient information.

Highlights:

• Second quarter adjusted diluted earnings per share (EPS) was $0.87, compared with $0.64 in the second quarter of 2011, an increase of 36%. ?Second quarter 2012 reported diluted EPS was $0.88, an increase of 31% from the same period in 2011.
• Second quarter Adjusted EBITDA increased 10% to $281 million.
• During the quarter, the Company repurchased 3.8 million shares of its common stock for $190 million at an average price of $49.35.
• The Company announced on July 19, 2012 that it completed a term securitization transaction involving the issuance of $300 million of investment-grade asset-backed notes at an advance rate of 90% and an overall weighted average coupon of 2.66%.
• Raises full year Adjusted EPS Guidance to $3.10 ? $3.20 from $3.00 ? $3.15

SECOND QUARTER 2012 OPERATING RESULTS Second quarter revenues were $1.1 billion, an increase of 4% from the prior year period. ?The increase reflected growth in our Lodging and Vacation Ownership businesses partially offset by unfavorable currency movements in our Vacation Exchange and Rentals business.

For the second quarter of 2012, adjusted net income was $128 million, or $0.87 per diluted share, compared with $108 million, or $0.64 per diluted share for the same period in 2011. ?The increase in adjusted net income primarily reflected stronger operating results in our Lodging and Vacation Ownership businesses. ?The increase in EPS also benefited from our share repurchase program, which decreased our weighted average share count by 14%.

Reported net income for the second quarter of 2012 was $128 million, or $0.88 per diluted share, compared with net income of $114 million, or $0.67 per diluted share, for the second quarter of 2011. The second quarter of 2011 included a refund of value added taxes, restructuring costs and legacy adjustments costs.

Free cash flow was $567 million for the six months ended June 30, 2012, compared to $595 million for the same period in 2011.? Excluding a $51 million refund of value added taxes received in the first half of 2011, free cash flow increased by 4%. ?The Company defines free cash flow as net cash provided by operating activities less capital expenditures, equity investments and development advances.? For the six months ended June 30, 2012, cash provided by operating activities was $647 million, compared with $696 million in the prior year period, which included the refund of value added taxes.

BUSINESS UNIT RESULTS

Lodging (Wyndham Hotel Group) Revenues were $233 million in the second quarter of 2012, an increase of 23%, compared with the second quarter of 2011.? The increase reflected domestic RevPAR gains of 8%, as part of a total system RevPAR increase of 5%, revenues associated with the Wyndham Grand hotel in Orlando, which opened at the beginning of the fourth quarter of 2011, and higher intersegment licensing fees for use of the Wyndham brand trade name.? The revenue increase also included a combined $21 million of reclassifications and incremental global conference fees, both of which were fully offset in expenses.

Adjusted EBITDA was $74 million, an increase of 12% compared with the second quarter of 2011, largely a result of the revenue increases, partially offset by the operating costs associated with the Wyndham Grand hotel in Orlando and higher marketing costs.

As of June 30, 2012, the Company?s hotel system consisted of over 7,170 properties and approximately 608,300 rooms. The development pipeline included approximately 900 hotels and 113,900 rooms, of which 53% were new construction and 53% were international.

Vacation Exchange and Rentals (Wyndham Exchange & Rentals)Revenues were $348 million in the second quarter of 2012, compared to $361 million in the second quarter of 2011. ?In constant currency and excluding the impact of acquisitions, revenues were flat.

Exchange revenues were $162 million, a decrease of 4% compared with the second quarter of 2011. ?In constant currency, exchange revenues were flat, as a 2% increase in exchange revenue per member was offset by a 2% decline in the average number of members due to the non-renewal of an affiliation agreement in the beginning of 2012.

Vacation rental revenues were $170 million, a 6% decrease compared with the second quarter of 2011. Excluding the impact of foreign currency and acquisitions, vacation rental revenues were flat, reflecting a 4% increase in the average net price per vacation rental offset by a 3% decrease in transaction volume.

Adjusted EBITDA for the second quarter of 2012 was $82 million, flat compared with the prior-year period.

Vacation Ownership (Wyndham Vacation Ownership) Revenues were $570 million in the second quarter of 2012, a 5% increase over the second quarter of 2011, primarily reflecting increased vacation ownership interest (VOI) sales.

Gross VOI sales were $460 million in the second quarter of 2012, up 12% from the second quarter of 2011, primarily reflecting a 6% increase in volume per guest and a 5% increase in tour flow.

Adjusted EBITDA for the second quarter of 2012 was $150 million, a 15% increase compared with the second quarter of 2011, primarily reflecting contributions from increased VOI sales.

Other Items

• The Company repurchased 3.8 million shares of common stock for $190 million during the second quarter of 2012 at an average price of $49.35. ?From July 1 through July 24, 2012, the Company repurchased an additional 1.1 million shares for $58 million at an average price of $50.77.? The Company has $733 million remaining on its current share repurchase authorization.
• Net interest expense in the second quarter of 2012 was $30 million, compared to $34 million in the second quarter of 2011.? The decline was primarily due to the absence of an accrual for interest on value added taxes in the second quarter of 2011 and a lower average cost of funds resulting from our debt tender and issuance activity during the first quarter of 2012.

Balance Sheet Information as of June 30, 2012:

• Cash and cash equivalents of approximately $285 million, compared with $142 million at December 31, 2011
• Vacation ownership contract receivables, net, of $2.8 billion, unchanged from December 31, 2011
• Vacation ownership and other inventory of approximately $1.1 billion, unchanged from December 31, 2011
• Securitized vacation ownership debt of $1.9 billion, unchanged from December 31, 2011
• Long-term debt of $2.3 billion, compared with $2.2 billion at December 31, 2011. The remaining borrowing capacity on the revolving credit facility was $908 million, compared with $771 million as of December 31, 2011

Did shooting suspect send plans to doctor?

AURORA, Colorado (Reuters) - The man accused in the movie house massacre at a Denver-area screening of the new "Batman" film mailed a notebook detailing his plans to a psychiatrist at his university before the attack, Fox News reported on Wednesday, as the first funeral was held for one of the 12 people killed.

The package allegedly sent by 24-year-old James Eagan Holmes remained unopened in a mailroom at the University of Colorado, for as long as a week before its discovery on Monday, FoxNews.com reported, citing a law enforcement source.

Reuters could not immediately verify the report. Messages left with police in Aurora and other law enforcement officials involved in the case were not immediately returned.

A spokesman for the FBI's Denver office said the bureau could not speak about any aspect of the investigation because the judge in the case had issued a protective order on Tuesday that strictly limits what attorneys, law enforcement and court staff can say publicly about the case.

The Fox News report said police and FBI agents were called to the University of Colorado Anschutz medical campus in Aurora on Monday morning after a psychiatrist who is a professor at the school reported receiving a package believed to be from the suspect.

Although that package turned out to be from someone else and harmless, a search of the Campus Services' mailroom turned up another parcel sent to the psychiatrist with Holmes' name in the return address, the source told Fox News.

After obtaining a search warrant, police took the package away and discovered its contents.

DRAWINGS, ILLUSTRATIONS

Fox News quoted its source saying: "Inside the package was a notebook full of details about how he was going to kill people. There were drawings of what he was going to do in it -- drawings and illustrations of the massacre."

Images in the notebook included drawings of stick-figures shooting at other stick figures, the FoxNews.com report said.

Fox News did not identify the psychiatrist. Holmes was a doctoral student in neuroscience at the Anschutz campus until filing paperwork to drop out in June.

University spokeswoman Jacque Montgomery declined to comment on the report, also citing Arapahoe County District Judge William Sylvester's gag order.

Montgomery said that, generally, all mail received by the university was sent to the Anschutz campus on the day it was received but packages were not logged or tracked unless a signature was required by the U.S. Postal Service.

Police say Holmes, wearing tactical body armor and a gas mask and toting three firearms, opened fire on a crowded midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises" in the Denver suburb of Aurora, killing 12 people and wounding 58 others.

Holmes, who was arrested behind the theater immediately after the attack, made his first appearance in court on Monday, appearing sleepy and disoriented. Authorities plan to formally charge him on July 30.

Also on Wednesday, hundreds gathered at the nondenominational Pathways Church in Denver for the first funeral for a victim of the July 20 massacre.

'HER LAST DANCE WITH HER DAD'

Gordon Cowden, at 51 the oldest victim of the shooting, was a real estate appraiser who had taken his teenage daughters to the movie theater where he was killed. His daughters escaped unharmed.

An excerpt from the funeral program attributed to his daughter Brooke read: "I will never forget that in such disorientation and confusion of that night what was certain were your yells, declarations of 'I love you' to both of us. Forever, with love, Brooke."

Joyce Zounis, who knew Cowden through a single parents group at her Aurora church, said Brooke Cowden gave an emotional speech during the service in which she recounted dancing with her father at an outdoor concert in June.

"Little did she know, this would be her last dance with her dad," Zounis, 50, said.

Doug Newman, a friend of Cowden, said the grief inside the church was "pretty intense."

"I'm in absolute shock," Newman said. ""I haven't been myself for a few days."

Services for Cowden came as 20 of those injured in the shooting remained hospitalized, seven in critical condition.

Judge Sylvester ruled on Tuesday that no cameras would be allowed in the courtroom when Holmes is charged next Monday. Holmes' initial appearance on Monday was televised.

Authorities have not offered a motive for the shooting spree. Police said Holmes, a former neuroscience student, left his 800-square-foot (75-square-metre) apartment booby-trapped with explosives that authorities said could have destroyed the entire complex.

Local and state bomb experts conducted a controlled demolition over the weekend. The building remains closed and police have not said when residents will be allowed to return.

Holmes, who authorities say dyed his hair red and told them he was The Joker in reference to Batman's comic-book nemesis, was being held in solitary confinement to protect him from other prisoners.

The shooting rampage has renewed debate in the United States about gun control. At the same time, Colorado authorities said on Tuesday that applications in the state for background checks to buy firearms surged in the aftermath of the shooting.
