N.C. State?s Rodon to pitch in USA Baseball prospect game
Former Holly Springs star was only N.C. player in national contest

When the USA Baseball Prospect Classic was played last weekend at Durham Bulls Athletic Park and USA Baseball National Training Complex, Carlos Rodon was the sole flag bearer for the state.The USA 18U and Collegiate rosters had just one player from North Carolina who made either roster ? and it was the N.C. State freshman. He was scheduled to pitch in the Tuesday night finale.The Holly Springs native has had a big year. He was named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Freshman Pitcher of the Year and the ACC Freshman of the Year and Pitcher of the Year, and is one of three finalists for USA Baseball?s Golden Spikes Award. The Golden Spikes Award, given to the top college baseball player, will be announced Friday. The Wolfpack, and the ACC, will have two other players among the five alternates on the Collegiate National team: infielder Trea Turner and catcher Danny Canela. While the Collegiate team will boast several players already in the national spotlight, including College World Series stars Grayson Greiner of South Carolina and Johnny Field of Arizona, both teams will have much to play for beyond the chance to make Team USA.With more than 100 scouts and a star-studded cast of former MLB stars ? including former World Series Most Valuable Player Scott Brosius, who will coach the Collegiate team ? the 18U and college players were showcasing their talents for the chance to become high MLB draft picks within the next two years.The 18U team had three of MaxPreps.com?s top 10 players in the country, with pitchers Chris Rivera and Keegan Thompson, along with top catcher prospect Jeremy Martinez. Cavan Biggio, son of former Houston Astros star Craig Biggio, also played.
