Oil rises above $113, heads for second monthly gain

LONDON (Reuters) - Oil rose above $113 a barrel on Friday, heading for a second monthly gain, supported by investor hopes of more monetary easing that could spur economic growth and support oil demand, and concern about supplies.

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke may acknowledge the U.S. central bank is actively considering another round of monetary easing in his Jackson Hole speech due to begin at 1400 GMT.

Brent crude was up 55 cents to $113.20 a barrel by 1234 GMT, after falling to a session low of $112.36 earlier. U.S. crude added 82 cents to $95.44.

"The crude oil markets are treading water in the run-up to the eagerly-awaited Jackson Hole conference," said Eugen Weinberg, analyst at Commerzbank. "If the statements made by Bernanke prove disappointing, oil prices could come under pressure."

The dollar weakened ahead of the speech by the Fed chief, which could disappoint markets if he stops short of signaling another bond-buying program is imminent, an outcome which many analysts say is a strong possibility.

Besides stimulus hopes, a drop in supply from the North Sea, source of the crude which underpins the Brent contract, due to oilfield maintenance as well as fighting in Syria and tension over Iran's nuclear program also lent support.

"Fundamentally, the market could come down, but there is this general fear factor around Iran, Syria, Israel and hurricanes which is not going to go away any time soon," said Tony Machacek, a broker at Jefferies Bache.

"Also, the euro has managed to stabilize, which has maybe helped oil creep higher. Short-covering before the weekend could also keep the market buoyant."

A U.N. report said on Thursday Iran had doubled the number of uranium enrichment centrifuges it has in an underground bunker, showing Tehran has expanded its nuclear work despite Western pressure and the threat of an Israeli attack.

Traders were keeping an eye on the prospect of another strike in Norway, just weeks after a walkout by oil production workers lasted 16 days and stopped 13 percent of Norway's oil production.

Norwegian oil drilling workers may strike on Sunday at drilling installations operated by KCA Deutag in two North Sea fields, but production will not be affected, a union leader said on Friday.

Other threats to supplies receded. The remnants of Hurricane Isaac, now downgraded to a tropical depression, were seen as posing no further threat to most oil and gas installations in the region.

The Gulf of Mexico oil and gas industry has so far reported no major storm-related damage to infrastructure although one Louisiana refinery had flooding. Energy production was expected to start ramping up again.

Also easing concern about supply in the near term, a Reuters survey on Thursday found Iranian oil shipments rose slightly in August, contributing to an increase in OPEC output mainly driven by exports from Angola and Nigeria.

Investments increase Cargill energy efficiency

Recent investments by Cargill at its Fort Morgan beef processing plant, totaling approximately $1.8 million, have increased the facility's energy efficiency and reduced the use of electricity, natural gas and associated costs.

High efficiency florescent lighting was installed through the entire plant and a new higher efficiency boiler was recently installed.

These and other energy efficiency improvements have resulted in a 10 percent reduction of natural gas use over the past three years, a five percent decrease in electricity use and an 8 percent increase in biogas recovery.

"I grew up on a small farm in Minnesota and know how important it is to properly manage every resource and waste nothing," said Nicole Johnson-Hoffman, assistant vice president and general manager at the Fort Morgan plant.

"Managing a large beef processing facility means that we do the same things that are done on small farms or small-scale beef processing operations, only we do it on a much larger scale. Because we focus our attention on doing both small and large tasks well, we have been able to achieve a high enough level of energy efficiency whereby every fifth head of cattle we harvest for beef is done so using renewable energy resources, and we're proud of that fact."

Cargill was able to capture greater energy efficiency through a holistic approach. An example Johnson-Hoffman points to is the 10 percent reduction of natural gas use that came about from the combined effort involving the installation of a new, more efficient, boiler; increased biogas recovery from the facility's water treatment operation; and implementation of an energy management system.

More than 30 percent of the fuel used by the facility is from renewable sources, while more than 23 percent of the total energy used (fuel and electricity) comes from renewables such as biogas.

Biogas is generated when methane is created, using anaerobic digesters to break down organic material in the plant's wastewater. The gas is then used as a fuel source, which prevents it from being released into the atmosphere.

Capturing the methane from biogas significantly reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions while serving as a valuable fuel source.

The plant's biogas recovery system reduces demand for natural gas equal to the amount consumed annually by more than 2,700 residential users, which is approximately two thirds of the residential houses in Fort Morgan. In 1995, Fort Morgan became the first of Cargill's 10 North American beef processing facilities to install a biogas recovery system.

"Our boiler efficiency increased 5-7 percent to approximately 85 percent by purchasing and installing a new unit that is heated using biogas and natural gas fuel," said Johnson-Hoffman. "We also reduced our cost of electricity by nearly $300,000 annually as a result of installing new lighting. The electricity savings equates to 3.4 million kilowatt hours annually, which is enough to supply power to 244 homes for a full year, based on U.S. Department of Energy calculations. Because of these improvements, Fort Morgan is now better positioned to meet the needs of our customers going forward."

The return on investment from this expenditure is due to reduced utility costs and improved energy and production efficiency, which justifies spending such as this from a business standpoint, while also supporting Cargill's efforts to be a good citizen and improve communities where it has operations, officials said.

"It is important that we respect and conserve the natural resources we use to produce beef that feeds millions of Americans and many others overseas, and we will never take those resources for granted," stated Johnson-Hoffman. "We firmly believe it is our responsibility to be stewards of all resources used in beef production, and that we must do all in our power to ensure the sustainability of our business for future generations of Americans that deserve freedom of choice to select safe, nutritious and affordable beef as part of their diet."

Vaughn wrote emails about new life in Canada, friend testifies

Dozens of detailed emails written by Christopher Vaughn to a friend he met on a social networking website depict a man planning to fake his own death and leave his wife and children behind for a new life in the Canadian wilderness.
?
The friend, Steve Willott of Ontario, Canada, read the lengthy messages aloud today in Will County court at Vaughn's trial on charges he killed his wife and three children in 2007. Willott said he and Vaughn talked about planning an extended camping trip in British Columbia or the Northwest Territories.
?
"I have been married for a long time and it was just really a few years ago I woke up and realized it was not going to work, and I did not want to be obligated to live this lifestyle until I am dead," Vaughn wrote in one email in February 2007, four months before the killings.
?
He wrote to Willott that his wife, Kimberly, will "be just fine" because he planned to fake his own death so she could collect on a large life insurance policy he had taken out on himself.
?
"Maybe she'll find someone who really has their mind in the game," Vaughn wrote.
?Vaughn also pictured what his perfect day would be 20 years in the future. He said it included waking up at dawn to chop wood, carrying back water from the lake, fishing, hunting and whittling arrows in the late-afternoon sun.?

The email exchanges between Vaughn and Willott began in late 2006 when the pair met on the website "43 Things." They quickly realized they had a lot in common and were both interested in ditching life in the fast lane for a solitary one living off the land, Willott testified.
?
Over the next eight months, Vaughn and Willott wrote to each other almost daily. The messages read in court were all from Vaughn and go on at length about meticulous plans he was making for his trip, including fashioning homemade hunting bows and arrows and outfitting packs and sleds with survival gear.
?
Vaughn wrote he was also planning a weeklong "scouting" trip to Canada in May.
?
Vaughn seemed preoccupied with every detail, from what he would be able to bring across the border to the cover story he would use with Canadian police if necessary. He talked about surviving in the cold, his prowess in skinning deer and wondered if he could grow red peppers in the northern climates to make his delicious spicy beef jerky.
?
"I have a tendency to over-plan," Vaughn wrote in one email. Later, however, he wrote that "being a little over-prepared never hurts."

Mill Hercules geared up to annihilate opposition in Carlsberg Trophy at Sunderland

Mill Hercules has the speed to win vital tussle for early supremacy and if he succeeds in doing so, no hound will be able to stop him from bagging the big prize in the Carlsberg Trophy at Sunderland on Wednesday, August 29th.

He is performing quite consistently these days. After clinching a comprehensive win at Nottingham, the black dog went to Newcastle with an aim to produce similar results. But the situation was completely different at the new venue, where he was third behind Skate On in a short-distance race.

He was an unlucky loser in his recent appearance at Sunderland last week. He got crowded twice in the early stages, but despite going through plenty of mess, the son of Black Shaw did not lose determination, and managed to secure a place among top-3.

Taking an early lead is the only thing, he needs to thrive today. Among his rivals are: Citizen Saga, Droopys Rory, Debs Aglish, Lefanta Jo and Croom Paddy. The 450 metres flat race carries a handsome cash prize worth ?300, and will be kicked off at 20:58 GMT.

Citizen Saga contested the Puppy Plate final, and would be a threat today. The blue dog was not impressive on his return to this track though, as he could only secure the third position last week. The red box is a massive advantage for J. Brannan?s trainee, and it will be interesting to see how he handles the situation.

Droopys Rory must stay in touch early, and will keep on well. He certainly needs a slice of luck to regain his momentum after two embarrassing defeats, he suffered respectively at Coventry and Nottingham.

Lefanta Jo has not been breaking as well as he can. So, one needs to look elsewhere for the champion. Debs Aglish needs to slip clear in order to do something special. Similarly, it is hard to see Croom Paddy taking home the gold.

Citizen Saga has a significant role to play, but the punters should stay with Mill Hercules, who will not face much trouble in crushing this line-up. Good luck to all the runners.

Dangers of Surfing: Be Careful when Surfing

Surfing Overview

In Surfing, the surfer takes a ride on breaking waves using a precise equipment regarded as surfboard, which will keep the surfer towards the shore. Surfing has been a valuable sports activity for around 500 years old, and possibly even older. Having long heritage, many similar sports were born because of surfing. These are wake boarding, skim boarding, skateboarding, as well as windsurfing.

Ancient Polynesians have been the pioneers who created the sport and brought it with them while they sailed to Hawaii, and all through the Pacific. Around the Islands of Hawaii, surfing had been exposed to missionaries as well as European explorers who wrote written accounts about this. Surfing was once a form of of art to the Hawaiians and also a part of their tradition way back in 1700's. Currently, Hawaii remains to be the number one location related to this sport. Many other preferred places having good surfing conditions would be California, Australia, Africa, Portugal as well as a lot more.

Risks of Surfing: Be Careful when Surfing

Even though you should be familiar with the hazards of surfing, you do not need to be worried with them. Do not end up being exasperated to enjoy surfing. Simply relax, don't be too careless, figure out your abilities, and then appreciate surfing. The chances of any dismal event occurring when surfing are somewhat low. It's simply better to be aware of the risks.

Marine Life - A number of underwater animals may cause threat to surfers. Sometimes they might result in injury and even fatalities. Among them, sharks are in the top of the list. Shark attacks, even if unusual to most coasts, may actually happen. Your probabilities beating them are rather slim with the shark's huge sharp teeth and unwarned attacks. Aside from sharks, you have to look out for other harmful sea animals just like the dangerous jelly fish, seals, snakes, urchins and sting ray.

As mentioned in many gossips, sharks prefer to feed in the time of sunset, so it's better stay away from the ocean throughout sunset if your own surfing location is known as a shark-infested area. To protect yourself from stingrays, surfers suggested to try and do the "stingray shuffle", where they shuffle their feet within the sand when they move forward in to the water to find waves. This could distract the sting rays that could be lurking within the warm, superficial sea water.

Drowning - You will need to learn how to swim to be a great surfer given that you're submerging oneself in the water together with great waves. Almost all water sports certainly necessitate swimming skills. A minimum of intermediate swimming skills are necessary just before you are able to master how to surf or else you'll be confronting a huge possibility to drowning. In fact professional surfers have drowned in really hard conditions. To be a good swimmer however is not a guarantee that you will be absolutely free from this risk.

You may drown due to leashes tangling along with reefs, clutching you down. Several other factors that cause drowning when surfing include falling out of your board and also failing to swim in, and unconsciousness due to an accident. Incredibly big waves also can drag you along with your board long distances, pulling you beneath them and then causing you to be drown. If you want to protect yourself, do not surf alone, particularly if you are a newbie. Have somebody (a friend or any companion) to watch out for you while you're surfing.

The Writing Bomb: 10 Creative Writing Ideas for Teens

For the last few years I've taught a creative writing course for a home school co-op and I've had a great time. Unfortunately,?I couldn't do it this year, so I sent a course syllabus to the co-op president to give to the students that were signed up. So, of course I had to share it with all of you as well.

If you have a teen who likes to write, or if you home school your children, or you just want to give your little writer some creative writing assignments, I have a 10-week mini course that will make writing fun for any kid between the ages of 10-17 (depending on level of maturity).

When your kid(s) finish with this course, I have a whole lotta more! In fact, I'm publishing a 36-week creative writing course for teens by early to mid 2013. So follow this blog for updates.

Writers: If you are a writer, and you'd like to contribute an "exercises" to the course, I'd love to hear from you. I think parents and teachers and the young writers of the world would love to receive writing tips from successful writers like you. So, if you leave a comment (i.e. writing exercise suggestion), be sure to include at least one writing credit, and I'll include your name/title in the course. NOTE: I will publish this, so you'll have to be okay with releasing your idea to Nexgate Press. But as I said, we will include your name/book title with the exercise.

Parents/Teachers: Feel free to copy and past. See instructions at the bottom of this post.

Creative Writing Exercises for Junior and Senior High Students.
By Jeff Bennington
Author of The Indie Author's Guide to the Universe.

Welcome to The Writing Bomb's Creative Writing Course for Junior & Senior High Students.?

Week 1.?Write a short story?(1-2 pages) from the perspective of your favorite animal: bird, dog, horse, skunk, etc. Let the animal in you describe what it is like living among humans, in the chicken coop, or in the dog house. What are your hopes and dreams? What are you looking for in a mate? How do you feel about rainy days, baths, and treats? What do you expect from your puppies, cubs, or kittens? Write a draft, have your parent grade it, and then rewrite/polish it.

Week 2.?Write a documentary?(1-2 pages)?about the most exciting thing that happened somewhere in the world in the last week. Don't know what happened in the world? Type in a Google search of... "What?happened?in the world the week of Sept. 1, 2012?" - or whatever the date is. Again, write the paper, have a parent grade it, then polish it. This is something you will always have to do (edit, revise, and revise again).

Week 3.?Write a?persuasive?paper?(1-2 pages) in favor of anything you are passionate about. All persuasive papers need an Introduction that states the main point, introduces the content to come, and includes a thesis statement (a sentence declaring the point you are trying to make).?

The Body of the paper must include at least three additional paragraphs. Each paragraph must support one of three basic supporting ideas, and have at least three sentences to prove your point or support the idea in that paragraph.?

Finally, you'll need a summary paragraph that summarizes the points listed above, and re-emphasizes the thesis statement. All in all ,there must be five paragraphs, with no less than three sentences in each paragraph. Seniors should have more content? especially since they will have to write a paper like this on the SAT in 30 minutes. PARENTS: This may be tough for junior highers and freshman but it is a good introduction nonetheless. Be patient with the younger ones.

Week 4.?Write a descriptive paper?(1full page) that describes your dream car, another one that describes your dream house (1full page), and another that describes the dream job (1 full page) that you will have to support those dreams (be realistic here? do not say you will be an ultra-rich rock star, unless you are working toward that today).

Week 5.?Write a Poem?(1full page) that describes the fall season and the beauty of the leaves turning and falling to someone who has never seen fall colors in the trees. Do not take anything for granted! Include colors, smells, sounds, feel, etc. Write another poem (1full page) about the joys of fall: sitting around the fire, camping, raking and playing in the leaves, carving pumpkins, trick-or-treating, etc.

Week 6.?Write a short story?(2 pages) about a family sitting around the dinner table talking, or sitting around a camp fire. Include conflict, different personalities, different ways of speaking (dialog) that is unique to each character. Be sure to resolve any conflicts that you start. Be creative, but be realistic. This is not a science fiction or fantasy assignment - that comes next.

Week 7.?Write a full-on short story?in the genre of your choice: Science fiction, Fantasy, Horror, Inspiration, Action Adventure, Romance. This is your choice. Write the story that you'd like to read. BUT, keep it short. If you are a junior higher, write a three page story. If you are a?junior or senior, make this a 5- 6-page short story. Be creative. The sky's the limit. You have two (2) weeks. Use the first week to write a rough draft and then turn it in to your parent(s)/teacher. Let them read it and suggest changes, correct spelling, etc. Then go back and revise.?

Week 8.?Your short story is due?by the end of week 8.

Week 9.?Write a descriptive paper?(1-2 pages) about what it would be like to be a real hero. If you were a hero, what would your super power be? How would you use it? Who would benefit from that gift? Where could you live so that you could save the most people? What does it take for you to remain strong? What would you look like? Are you from another planet? Did grow up underground, or in another realm? And finally, what is the one thing that causes you to become powerless?

Week 10.?Write your own autobiography? starting from when you are young, going forward through your life, including college, career, victories, failures, marriage, children, family, occupation, illnesses, and ultimately (and I know this is morbid) your death and funeral. This is a perfect opportunity for you to explore your dreams and hopes for the future, and for your parents to get to know you better.

Parents and teachers: Pay attention to what your kids/students write. I have read a few papers over the years where a child has revealed critical "secrets". Listen to their words; they could be telling you something.?

PLEASE SHARE this post with anyone you think might be interested.

Directions:?All papers should be assigned early in the week and due by Friday unless otherwise noted. These papers can be hand written, single spaced (large cursive writers can add an extra half page), or typed as double spaced, 12-point font). Students should always write a rough draft and have a parent grade it mid-week with the final revision due on the last day of the week. Parents, should focus on spelling, grammar, structure, and less on content, relative to the?child's?age. I wouldn't look at these assignments as critical to a student's progress, unless they are at the junior/senior level. In general, these are simply creative?exercises?and tools for teaching basic writing and communicative skills.?Have fun! Jeff Bennington??is the best-selling author of Reunion, Twisted Vengeance, and The Indie Author's Guide to the Universe.??

Can These Tips Improve Your Email Marketing Strategy? : Internet ...

TIP! One great way to increase the success of your email marketing campaigns is to give your customers choices. Allow your customers a choice of exactly what they receive from you and how often they receive it; also, don?t demand that they disclose a lot of information.

You need a strong understanding of email marketing to do it effectively. It is key to have the recipient actually read your email, so it is important to concentrate on a way to have an effective message and avoid the spam folder. Here is some advice and information on how you can use email marketing to make your business more successful.

TIP! Allow people visiting your site to have several chances to sign up for your email list without pressuring them. You need to make it clear to potential subscribers that you will not sell or rent their information to third parties and that there is something in it for them, if they sign up.

To make sure you communicate all of your information, consider using multi-part emails. The communications you send out should include both plain text and HTML content to properly show up in their email messages. This will keep users happy, no matter what format they prefer to receive emails in.

Mailing List

TIP! Consider emailing without images. Images do brighten up a message, but they can be slow to load or even get filtered out altogether.

You want to make sure your sales list is a highly targeted one. When you do this, you will help to ensure that consumers most interested in your products are receiving your emails. If you give the impression that the mailing list is exclusive and only for a select few who are interested, your mailing list will be more targeted and your mailings will seem to carry more weight.

TIP! Try and keep your subject lines less than 60 total characters. Longer titles will often be reduced to this length and additional words will be lost.

To follow up with any of your prospects, you might want to send them an email to remind them about your other services or products. Invite them to shop at your site. The conclusion can offer a money back guarantee or limited time return.

TIP! Being pegged as a ?spammer? is not something that is good for a business and it is important to take precautions against being labeled as such. This amounts to sending new subscribers a validation email that aims to confirm that the right email address is subscribing to the list.

You need to make sure that you are using a persistent strategy. Having said that, you should ensure that this is with the correct customers. Otherwise, it won?t matter all that much. If your messages are not properly targeted, your customer base cannot grow.

TIP! Take a look at the emails your competitors are sending out. Subscribing to their emails is the perfect way to do so.

Don?t add an address to your email subscriber list without their permission. If you add people who have not subscribed to your e-mails, you will develop a bad reputation. You could also face penalties from the provider of your email services if you violate their rules regarding spamming.

Email Clients

TIP! Your email?s subject line should jump out at the reader and make them want to know more. You have to get the subscribers? attention, so that they want to find out what the email has to say.

View your emails on different platforms to see how they look. When you are happy with the design on your computer, use email clients, all applicable browsers and operating systems to test it out. Emails can vary on how they appear in different email clients, such as Linux Gmail or Windows Hotmail.

TIP! It is very smart to include an opt-in button for people to sign up with you. This probably seems like overkill, but doing so makes you far less likely to receive spam complaints from people on your list.

The primary reason for email marketing is to lead customers to purchase your products or services. Your emails should make your readers want to buy your products. Share new product information, coupons, discounts and new promotions with your readers.

TIP! Email marketers must be sure to carefully proofread all marketing emails before sending them out. That should be a no-brainer, but it is an easy thing to forget.

When working on an email marketing campaign, keep a personal tone in your messages. The recipients are far more likely to respond positively to an e-mail that isn?t overly formal and distant. Messages from someone powerful in your company will make a much stronger and more lasting impression on the people receiving the emails.

TIP! Create a personal email for your readers. It has been shown that when customers feel a personal connection with a business, they are more likely to continue their relationship.

Make a schedule for distribution of newsletters and keep with it. Newsletters should be sent out on a consistent schedule and time table. Your customers will know when they will get email from you and will, therefore, be able to look for it.

TIP! If you plan on starting a marketing campaign via email, it is vital that you get permission from every single person you plan on contacting. If you don?t, you could get a lot of spam complaints or lose customers for good.

Test variations of your subject line via A/B testing. Take one of your emails, and divide the mailing list in two. Send each half of the list the same mail, but with differing subject lines. You can learn which subject wording is most influential in getting your customer base to open your messages.

Marketing Campaign

TIP! Emails are a great way to add a personal touch to your interaction with clients. When you are sending emails, you should aim to keep them fairly brief.

The hints above can transform your marketing campaign from useless spam to interesting mail, but you have to work at it. Use them on one of your current projects or build them into a new marketing campaign. You will be surprised at how quickly you succeed in your efforts

Improving Your Life, One Home Improvement At A Time | Marijuana ...

Your mood is influenced by your surroundings, and this is especially true within your own home. Some people spend even more time at home if they work there. If this is your situation, it makes it even more important that you are happy with your home. When your home is nice, it is easier to do everything. Here are some tips to assist you in creating a home that you can truly enjoy and love to live in.

Being comfortable in your home is paramount to your well-being. True, no home is perfect, but if your home?s shortcomings cause everyday irritation, this will affect your outlook on life. To live a happy life, you should make your home as comfortable as possible. Your home?s comfort level is a key feature of your home that needs appropriate attention paid to it. A good example of increasing your comfort level at home is to make sure your furniture is suited to your needs. If you can?t reach that high shelf, lower it, or get yourself a step stool. If your shins are constantly bruised from bumping the coffee table?s corners, get a round one. Even a small change can lead to vast improvements in your life.

Expand your space. No matter how much organizing and reorganizing you do, there?s only so much space in your home, and you can run out of room. When the walls are creeping in on you, an expansion is a good option. Even a very small expansion can do a lot to remove the stress associated with junk and clutter.

Make your home more pleasant and valuable by adding recreational features to your property. You can increase the value of your home by adding something simple like a basketball hoop or something large like a pool. These types of amenities can add to the enjoyment of your home.

Consider the lighting in your home. Just by altering it a little bit can bring a drab, dark spot to life and it can make an area seem more appealing. A quick and very easy way to improve your home?s lighting is to check for old bulbs. These bulbs create a dimmer ambient light, so when you replace them, it can prove enlightening by brightening your spaces. If you know how, you can even change the fixtures.

Make the most of your outdoor space by planting a garden; this turns any yard into a lush and inviting space. You can use the services of a gardener and still see the benefits that a garden provides. Some of these benefits include relief of stress and better air, and if you pick the right things to plant, you can also enjoy flowers, herbs and veggies.

It is also wise to think about doing things to improve the exterior of your home. You can add value and beauty to your house by brightening up the appearance with fresh paint, new windows, or updating the roof. Plus, your refreshed home will be a much more inviting experience for your guests!

Projects to improve your home are investments in both your emotional well-being and financial future. Life is so much more enjoyable when you can spend time in a home that you really love.

Syrian rebels left lives as butchers, barbers

MAREA, Syria (AP) ? In their previous lives, they were butchers, barbers, construction workers and university students.

Now they are rebels fighting a civil war they hope will end Syrian President Bashar Assad's authoritarian rule.

The rebels are a mixed bunch, a combination of army defectors, Islamists, intellectuals, laborers and other ordinary people who took up arms against one of the Middle East's most brutal police states.

"We kept saying peaceful, peaceful. But they came at us with guns and shells and airplanes, so we finally said: "This peaceful isn't working," said Mohammed Sami, 22.

He said he sold vegetables and worked in a grocery store in this small town in northern Syria before persuading his father to invest in his dream: a barber shop.

He worked with a friend and their shop had two chairs, big mirrors, electric clippers and a TV set.

After the uprising started, he said they hung a revolutionary flag on the wall. When soldiers raided the village, Sami said they set his place on fire.

Soon after, Sami said he joined the rebels.

Bader Farouh, 17, said he got arrested soon after catching the revolutionary bug. Police nabbed him from a protest in the northern city of Aleppo. For three days, he said they folded his body into the hole of a car tire and beat him with sticks. They let him go after he signed a pledge to stop protesting.

But they caught him at another protest a week later and he said they hung him naked on a wall for more beatings. Twelve days later, he was freed in a prisoner exchange between the regime and the rebels.

Afterward, he said his father took him to the head of a local rebel brigade and told him: "Take him and treat him like one of your sons."

That was six months ago.

Ahmed al-Saleh, 22, said he wanted to go to university after he graduated from high school but didn't have the money to pay for it or the grades to get the government to do so. So he said he joined the police and stamped passports at an isolated border crossing with Turkey. He liked the job and earned $270 per month.

When the uprising started, he said he supported it "in his heart" but kept quiet.

He marched in his first protest while on home leave, and he said it felt "amazing."

Last month, he ran away. Once he got home, he said he borrowed $1,000 from a friend to buy a Kalashnikov rifle.

Like many, he said he intends to go back to his normal life if the regime falls, meaning he'll rejoin the police force.

"I volunteered to serve my country, not to serve Bashar or anyone else," he said.

Sami the barber also hoped to resume his old life after the war, though he said it would be different without the regime.

"They torched my shop because I put up a flag," he said. "After the revolution, I'll put up whatever I want. There will be flags all over the place."

Jury in Apple case: You can patent cool

Ahn Young-Joon / AP

Samsung's Galaxy S III, right, and Apple's iPhone 4S are displayed at a mobile phone shop in Seoul, South Korea, Friday. After a year of scorched-earth litigation, a U.S. jury decided Friday that Samsung ripped off the innovative technology used by Apple to create its revolutionary iPhone and iPad.

By Martha C. White

Yes, you can patent the cool factor. That was the message of the nine-member jury that took just three days to reach a verdict in the?landmark Apple-Samsung patent infringement battle.

After a three-week trial, the jury concluded Friday that Samsung had willfully violated Apple patents, copying the look and feel of the massively popular iPhone and iPad in its own smartphone and Tablet devices. Samsung came up empty in its cross-claims against Apple and was ordered to pay $1.05 billion in damages.

Although Samsung suggested it would appeal, saying the jury ruling was "not the final word in this case," Samsung devices could be pulled from the U.S. market soon as Apple said it will seek an injunction at a Sept. 20 hearing. The decision was a blow to Google, whose Android operating system powers Samsung's devices, which generally sell at a discount to comparable Apple products.

Apple's late CEO Steve Jobs had threatened to go "thermonuclear" on Google over its perceived theft of Apple's intellectual property, according to Job's biographer, and new CEO Tim Cook has continued to aggressively press the legal battle around the world.

The federal court jury agreed with Apple's claims that not only was it able to protect the distinctive design of its products but also technology such as the ability of users to "pinch-and-zoom" to manipulate images using two or more fingers on device touchscreens.

Intellectual property experts said the decision will push?push smartphone and tablet manufacturers to come up with new ideas ? and patent them all.

"Every single technology company in the world will be filing every single design patent known to man,"?said?Kevin G. Rivette, managing partner at 3LP Advisors.

Related: Jury sides with Apple, orders Samsung to pay $1 billion

While the decision will almost certainly be appealed, it also sets a precedent. It is a shot across the bow that other device manufacturers can?t afford to ignore.

Apple had a less favorable outcome in Samsung's home country of South Korea, where a three-judge panel ruled earlier Friday that both companies had infringed on each other and halted sales of products made by Apple as well as Samsung.

Apple was widely favored to come out on top in the case decided today, partly because the court?s Silicon Valley location is friendly territory for the Cupertino-based company, and also because of the disparity between the way the two sides presented their arguments.

As the plaintiff, it was in Apple?s best interest to make its message easy to digest. For a company that built its brand on making technology simple and pleasant to interact with, this was a natural. Samsung had the burden of wading into more complex territory and hoping jurors would follow along.

That Apple carried the day indicates that its streamlined message resonated more strongly, because patent experts say that design patent infringement, for which Apple was seeking the largest damages, is hard to prove. These patents focus on form over function: how something looks as opposed to what it does.

Apple took the bold and risky tack of arguing that the way its devices look and feel is an integral part of how people use them. Other smartphone and tablet makers now have to find ways to create devices that don?t resemble the iPhone ? no easy feat, given that Apple more or less created the idea in people?s minds of what a smartphone should look like when it debuted the iPhone five years ago.

"It will force innovation," Rivette said, a circumstance that might cause some heartburn for smartphone and tablet manufacturers but will ultimately benefit consumers.?

CNBC's Jon Fortt reports from outside the courtroom following the jury's verdict. Apple was awarded more than $1 billion and had many of its patents upheld.

Aside from Apple, the jury's decision creates a few other unlikely winners, including Microsoft, for one. Analysts have said for months that Microsoft must convince consumers that Windows 8 offers a relevant alternative to iOS and Android. The sudden interest in devices that don?t behave like iPhones and iPads coincides almost perfectly with the platform?s debut.

Rivette said the verdict will invigorate technology patent wars, which means companies like Google ? which has been in Apple?s crosshairs before and almost certainly will be again ? will be scrambling for ammunition. Former tech heavyweights Research in Motion and Eastman Kodak both have vast patent portfolios that suddenly look like a good investment in light of the $1 billion award for damages.

Ecuador says Britain withdraws threat to raid embassy over Assange

QUITO (Reuters) - Britain has withdrawn a threat to enter Ecuador's embassy in London to arrest WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange who has taken refuge there, President Rafael Correa said on Saturday, taking the heat out of the diplomatic standoff.

"We consider this unfortunate incident over, after a grave diplomatic error by the British in which they said they would enter our embassy," Correa said in a weekly media address.

In a statement, Ecuador's government said it had received "a communication from the British Foreign Office which said that there was no threat to enter the embassy."

Ecuador was furious after the British government warned it might try to seize Assange, who has been holed up in the building for more than two months trying to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he is wanted for questioning over rape and sexual assault allegations.

Ecuador, which has granted the former computer hacker asylum, demanded that Britain's threat be retracted. The latest move should improve relations between Quito and London and allow more talks on Assange's fate to take place.

For now, however, Assange remains trapped in the embassy with British police waiting outside. Britain has said it is determined to fulfill a legal obligation to send him to Sweden.

The Washington-based Organization of American States had condemned Britain's threat, and South American foreign ministers strongly backed Correa's position that Britain's warning was unacceptable and could set a dangerous precedent.

Correa says he shares Assange's fears that if handed over to Sweden, he could then be extradited to the United States to face charges over WikiLeaks' 2010 publication of secret U.S. cables.

U.S. and European government sources say the United States has issued no criminal charges against the WikiLeaks founder and has launched no attempt to extradite him.

Ecuador's government says it never intended to prevent Assange from facing justice in Sweden. It has said that if he received written guarantees from Britain and Sweden that he would not be extradited to any third country then Assange would hand himself over to the Swedish authorities.

Assange, whose platinum hair and friendships with the rich and famous have helped make him a global celebrity, spoke from the embassy's balcony last weekend, denouncing what he called a "witch hunt" by the United States against him and WikiLeaks.

Rumor: Apple will wait until October to announce smaller iPad

3 hrs.

Rumor is that Apple will hold a very special event on Sept. 12. The general assumption is that Apple will announce the next-generation iPhone and a smaller iPad, but now some are suggesting that the Cupertino-based company will wait until October to talk about what's being dubbed the "iPad Mini" or "iPad Air."

Let's be clear: We don't actually know if Apple is even working on a smaller iPad. All we have to go on are reports from anonymous sources and leaked?parts which are?allegedly?intended for this tablet. There's currently ?no official word from Apple confirming the existence of the iPad Mini. But where there's smoke, there's occasionally a fire.

Tech blogger/Apple watcher John Gruber ? who has a good track record when it comes to reasoning out details ? seems convinced that the smaller tablet is coming, but not until October.?

"I don?t think Apple would want reviews of both a new iPhone and new-size iPad appearing at the same time," Gruber?writes. "The iPhone is too big, too cool, and garners too much attention ? and it?s in Apple?s interest to keep that attention undiluted."

Instead of having two new devices share the stage in September, Apple will likely use the first or second week of October ??when it typically holds a music-themed event ??to unveil the new iPad (and perhaps some new iPod devices), Gruber speculates.?Jim Dalrymple, another well-connected tech writer and?Apple follower with a solid track-record on rumors,?is nodding along.?

"Oh, that Gruber is a smart fellow," he simply adds.

For what it's worth, we frequently reach out to the folks at Apple and ask them if they're feeling crazy enough to?chit-chat about their upcoming products, but as it's their policy not to address such rumors, we'll have to?keep speculating until the cows come home?? or until?the Apple executives?come to the Moscone Center.

Want more tech news?or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.
