Incorporates His Award-Winning Film
SPOKANE, Wash. ? Eric Sirotkin, an international human rights attorney who works with the Truth and Reconciliation Commissions in South Africa and Korea and gained widespread public attention with his award-winning film ?Committing Poetry in Times of War,? will present two lectures at Gonzaga University School of Law on Monday, Oct. 22.?The events are free and open to the public.
The film that Sirotkin produced and co-wrote?chronicles a high school humanities teacher in New Mexico who was fired for letting his poetry team students express their opposition to the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
In his first lecture at noon in Room 143 of the Law School (721 N. Cincinnati St.), Sirotkin will discuss his work with the Truth and Reconciliation Commissions in Korea and South Africa.
?These commissions and other peacemaking actions serve as a basis for ?empathic civilization,?? Sirotkin said.
Later Oct. 22, at 5 p.m., Sirotkin will discuss the peace process in Korea; this event will takes place in the Law School?s Barbieri Courtroom.
?This is a 60-year-old conflict, but it holds the key to halt the march toward increased militarization in Asia,? he said.
On Sunday, Oct. 21, Sirotkin will present a performance piece that incorporates his award-winning film at 7 p.m. at Jones Radiator (120 E. Sprague Ave.). ?Its aim is to empower and inspire people,? says Sirotkin, who sees his life?s work as ?connecting creative expression with the promotion of peace, be it on a global or a local scale.? This event also is free and open to the public but is limited to those age 21 and older.
Sirotkin?s visit is co-sponsored by the Gonzaga Journal of International Law, the International Law Society, the National Lawyers Guild, the Student Bar Association Diversity Committee, and the SBA Alliance for Social Justice to launch Public Interest Week and is also part of the Gonzaga University School of Law?s Centennial Celebration.
