2 dead after helicopter crashes in central London

(RNN) - A helicopter has crashed into a construction crane in central London during morning rush hour, according to reports from the scene.

Conditions were foggy when the helicopter crashed into the Georges Wharf Tower, a luxury residential building.

The Metropolitan Police confirm the pilot was killed and another person at the scene. Thirteen others were injured, including one person who was treated for a broken leg.

The pilot was the only person in the helicopter. The helicopter charter company Rotormotion confirmed to CNN a pilot employed by the company has died.

The second person was reportedly "in close proximity" to the aircraft, according to CNN.

"It is something of a miracle that this was not many, many times worse given the time of day," police commander Neil Basu told CNN.

The scene of the crash is near the location of the spy agency MI6 and Vauxhall, south of the River Thames.

The incident occurred about 8 a.m. Wednesday morning and does not appear to be terrorism-related, according to the Metropolitan Police.

Witnesses reported explosions and fire. Vehicles are thought to have been involved in the crash.

London's Air Ambulance stated on Twitter their craft was not involved in the incident but the company is on scene.
